The St. Croix Landmarks Society's Annual Old-Time Crucian Christmas celebration kicks off today at the Estate Whim Museum and promises to give locals and visitors a taste of what Christmastime used to be like on St. Croix...way back when.
The four-day open house is in its fifth year and will run through Saturday, Dec. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each night.
According to event organizers, this year's theme is "A Calabash Christmas" and will feature the Great House decorated with calabash gourds hand-painted by local children and artists. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to clean, prepare and decorate a calabash ornament of their own.
The family-friendly event will also highlight a variety of traditions. A traditional Crucian Christmas tree, known as the inkberry tree, will be on display in the Great House as well as a Danish Christmas tree, complete with handmade ornaments and garlands.
Hispanos Unidos of the V.I. will present Puerto Rican Christmas traditions with decorations and a special children’s celebration. Furthermore, local musicians and choirs will provide entertainment with seasonal selections as guests stroll the exhibit halls, My Granny House and the museum grounds.
