Update: Waste Management said late Saturday that normal operations at the Anguilla Landfill had resumed, suggesting that the fire was either entirely extinguished, or was under control.

ORIGINAL STORY: ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority on Saturday said that an active fire at the Anguilla Landfill was reported Friday at 11:04 p.m.

WMA said the fire is located on the east corner of the Landfill. Virgin Islands Fire Service and WMA contractors and personnel were working expeditiously to bring the fire under control, the authority said.

Waste Management advised the public and all haulers that landfill operations have been temporarily suspended. Haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hours resume.

Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change, Waste Management said. The authority said it will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the Landfill.
