The Women’s Coalition of St. Croix (WCSC), which has offered essential, often lifesaving social services to people in need, without regard to race, class or social standing for over 39 years, will provide the community opportunities to address institutional and internalized racism in the U.S. Virgin Islands through a virtual forum in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Consortium.
"The Time is Now: Discuss, Digest and Dismantle Racism in the USVI", is a four-part series focused on action-oriented discussion, starting on November 20, the coalition said.
“We are not here to teach, but to share knowledge and reach an understanding about the existence of racism in our country, and how it is personified in our island community,” commented Lisa Harris-Moorhead, a longtime member of WCSC's board of directors. Ms. Harris-Moorhead had the idea for the forum and formed a committee for its creation.
The sessions are designed to help build a stronger foundation in anti-racism, highlighting an informed, inclusive perspective, the release stated. Beginning with a discussion on the meaning of racism and other related terms, the sessions will focus on the myth of race, historical racism in the territory and community action around anti-racism, according to the release. Each session will include a roundtable of contributors, community members with expertise or knowledge related to the topics to be examined. The forum will be moderated by Allyson Reaves.
The Time is Now: Discuss, Digest and Dismantle Racism in the USVI will be broadcast in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Consortium, on the media company's digital platforms. Admission to the forum is free, but will be limited to 150 people, with pre-registration required, the coalition said.
Certificates of completion will be awarded to participants who complete all four sessions. The first session, Definitions: Racism vs. Bias vs Prejudice vs Discrimination…, will be held on Friday, November 20. More information about the forum is available on WCSC’s the VI Consortium’s websites - wcstx.org and viconsortium.com, and on their social channels.
