Senator Kurt Vialet came under heavy criticism on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022 for an amendment he sponsored that cleared the way for a company named Raising Cane to start a rum distillery in Frederiksted. Community members voiced frustration that the amendment allowed the company to evade zoning laws that require public comment and public hearings before a zoning change can be approved or rejected. The meeting was held at the Rotary West Community Center in Frederiksted near the under-construction Paul E. Joseph Stadium.
