The Bryan administration on Thursday morning dug up a horse racing track in Williams Delight, destroying the space that facilitated what had become one of the Sunday attractions on St. Croix during the past two years. During his Covid-19 press briefing on Thursday, the governor said the race track was illegal and that the land owner had asked the government to stop the activity.
On Thursday night, however, the horsemen, heartbroken, spoke out and said they had permission by the land owner — they had been there for over two years — and that it was pressure from the administration that forced the land owner to disavow the horsemen and the race track they had built.
Governor Bryan said he "cringed" every time he saw the race track, describing it as dangerous. He further stated that all the laws of the USVI should be enforced and therefore the "illegal" facility could not continue.
On Thursday morning, a backhoe could be seen digging up the track, an action some have described as savage and vicious.
The horsemen, many of them young, had gone through a lot to get to the point they were before the government's action on Thursday, moving from location after location until settling at the Williams Delight spot.
