ST. THOMAS — The V.I. Water and Power Authority has announced the launch of the Feeder 5A Electrical Underground Project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the electrical system by transitioning Feeder 5A from an overhead to an underground distribution system.

The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 3, with Haugland, VI serving as the contractor responsible for construction on behalf of WAPA. Officials anticipate that physical construction will commence on February 17, with substantial completion expected by November 2025.
The undergrounding of Feeder 5A will affect multiple facilities and locations, including:
- Cyril E. King Airport Beacon
- Water Island
- FAA Facilities
- Emerald Beach Beachcomber
- WAPA Fuel Dock
- WAPA Tanks
- WAPA LPG Facility
During certain phases of the project, occasional electrical service disruptions may occur. WAPA has assured the public that it will make every effort to minimize inconveniences and will provide advance notifications to affected customers through WAPA alerts.
Construction activities may lead to temporary traffic disruptions in the impacted areas, WAPA said. Traffic control plans will be issued ahead of any roadway changes, and WAPA urges drivers to exercise caution and adhere to directions from flaggers and traffic management personnel.
The Feeder 5A Electrical Underground Project is part of WAPA’s broader efforts to modernize and strengthen the electrical grid, reducing vulnerability to weather-related disruptions and improving overall system reliability.

WAPA encourages residents and businesses in the affected areas to stay informed and prepare for potential service interruptions by monitoring WAPA alerts and public notices.
