United States Attorney for the V.I., Delia L. Smith, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, is recognizing crime victims, law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and faith-based institutions during National Crime Victims' Rights Week from April 23-29, 2023.
The annual event aims to honor victims of crime and those who advocate on their behalf. This year's theme is "Survivor Voices: Elevate. Engage. Effect Change," emphasizing the importance of engaging with and learning from the lived experiences of crime victims.
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime, has been leading communities across the country in observing National Crime Victims' Rights Week since 1981 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first event. In the District of the Virgin Islands, Victim Witness Coordinator Antoinette James-Alleyne plays a crucial role in supporting federal crime victims by providing essential services, including referrals to counseling, securing temporary housing, and assisting with access to victim compensation funds.
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, collaborates with federal, state, local, and tribal justice systems to provide innovative leadership and disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge and practices across the United States. The federal government partners with law enforcement officers in states, cities, and neighborhoods to help implement crime-fighting strategies.
