The V.I. Police Department along with the V.I. Office of Highway Safety’s Police Traffic Services Program, are urging all motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists to drive with caution and slow speeds when traffic signals become inoperable due to malfunctions or an electrical service interruption.

According to the release issued on Friday, traffic signals provide a safe and better flow of traffic at intersections and pedestrian crossings, and in the event of an interruption to these traffic safety devices, the VIPD and VIOHS are asking that everyone adhere to the following rules to remain safe:

  • Always slow down, reducing your speed to no more than 10 miles per hour, when approaching an intersection, stopping when you arrive.
  • Never block an intersection.
  • A vehicle that arrives at an intersection, or crossroad first, has the right-of-way.
  • If another vehicle arrives at the intersection or crossroad at the same time with you, give way to the vehicle located on your left.
  • Always communicate with other motorists and cyclists, using your headlights or turn signals.
  • Always slow down when approaching crosswalks, stopping when pedestrians are visible.
  • Pedestrians should always use crosswalks and sidewalks when available. If none are available, always walk safely facing the traffic.

The V.I.P.D. did not say whether the release was a result of increased vehicular accidents when stoplights are not operating correctly, or whether it was part of a mandated notice to the public for safety.
