Beresford Edwards, chairman emeritus of the Virgin Islands Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), was selected as a 2020 James M. Roche Spirit of Volunteerism Award recipient, the ESGR has announced.
This honor is the highest award given by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to a state committee volunteer, according to a release issued Friday. It is given for sustained, exceptional, and superior service for a period of at least five years. Every year an ESGR volunteer is named for each of its four regions, Mr. Edwards is the 2020 Roche Award recipient for the Southeast region.
“VI ESGR congratulations and thanks Beresford for all he does for ESGR,” said VI ESGR State Chairman Stanley Jones. “We were honored to nominate him and are happy to celebrate with him and his family.”
Ronald E. Bogle, ESGR National Chair, stated in Edwards’s award letter, “This award recognizes your sustained quality service as an ESGR volunteer over a substantial number of years. Your selection highlights your patriotism, good citizenship, and public service, at times achieved through great personal sacrifice. Your active participation has significantly enhanced the effectiveness of ESGR and the defense of our Nation, for which we are extremely grateful.”
“I am honored to be the recipient of the 2020 Roche Award,” Mr. Edwards said. “Thanks to you and the committee for your support! I am happy to serve.”
According to the release, Mr. Edwards continues to volunteer with the committee and currently serves as the ombudsman assistant director.
A recipient of the Roche Award must have served at least five years, received the state Spirit of Volunteerism Award, be nominated by the state chairman and have personal endorsements.
“This is a historic occasion, Beresford is the third VI ESGR committee member to receive the highest award given by ESGR to a state volunteer,” Mr. Jones said. “A VI ESGR committee volunteer has been a recipient of the Roche Award for the last three years. It is truly an honor for me to have such an outstanding group of volunteers.”
