Vessup Beach cleanup in St. Thomas
A total of 78 students were among the over 100 volunteers who turned out on Saturday to address the accumulation of trash from Vessup Beach in Estate Nazareth. The beach cleanup, organized by waste management company YES! Waste Management, successfully removed 80 bags of garbage from the St. Thomas coastline.
Among the detritus were discarded fishing lines, plastic jugs, fast food containers, cans, bottles – even a partially sunken dinghy. The volume of trash collected, the organizers say, highlights the urgent need for responsible waste management practices in the territory’s sensitive coastal areas.
Corporate supporters of the event included West Indies Windsurfing, which provided volunteers with free kayaks and paddle boards with which to explore Muller Bay, while St. Croix brewery Leatherback Brewing Company provided some of their products for the enjoyment of the adult volunteers.
“We are thrilled with the overwhelming support we received for this beach clean-up initiative,” declared MacKenzie Stoller, co-owner of YES! Waste Management. “It’s inspiring to see members of our community, especially the students, come together to make a positive impact on our environment.”
The company is calling on the business community to support future beach-cleanups and other environmental initiatives in the community, all in an effort to encourage sustainable waste management practices and a philosophy of environmental conservation in the territory.
