The Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission will have its annual taxicab medallion auction on all three islands for December 16, 17 and 18, Government House has announced. The auction is open to military veterans only.
The auctions for two medallions on each island will take place at 11 a.m.:
- On St. Thomas on Monday, December 16 at the Taxicab Commission Office in Sub Base.
- On St. John on Tuesday, December 17 at the St. John Administrator’s Office.
- On St. Croix at the Taxicab Commission Office at 3274 Estate Richmond.
Applications are available at the Taxicab Commissions offices between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Applications must be taken to the Virgin Islands Veterans Affairs for verification of eligibility as a veteran on the island for which the bid is scheduled.
Bid forms must be deposited in the bid box no later than 10 a.m. on the day of the auction.
The minimal accepted bid is set at $20,000 for St. Thomas and St. John and $8,000 for St. Croix.
In addition to the application for the medallion auction and the documents listed on the application, participants must include two of these three documents to verify residency on the island of the auction:
- Current property tax bill
- Residential lease agreement
- V.I. Water and Power Authority electricity bill
A 10 percent down payment – which is nonrefundable if the sale is not consummated – of the bid amount is required at the time of the bid or no later than 3 p.m. the day of the auction. Down payments must be made by certified check or money order made payable to the Government of the Virgin Islands, and no cash payments will be accepted.
The remaining 90 percent balance must be paid by certified check or money order within 10 days of the date of the auction sale. If the sale is not consummated within the 10-day period, the second-highest bidder will be awarded the bid.
