The V.I. Taxicab Commission has announced the schedule for its 2024 Veteran Medallion Auction, set to take place on December 11, 12, and 13, 2024. This annual event, conducted pursuant to Title 20, Section 407(c) of the Virgin Islands Code, is open exclusively to U.S. Virgin Islands veterans of the armed services.

Applications are now available at the Taxicab Commission’s offices during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). To qualify, applicants must have their eligibility verified by the Office of Veterans Affairs for the respective island where they plan to submit their bid. Completed bid forms must be deposited in the designated bid box no later than 10:00 a.m. on the day of the auction, and bidders are required to be present at the auction.

Auction Details

  • St. Thomas: Wednesday, December 11, 11:00 a.m. (Location TBA)
  • St. Croix: Thursday, December 12, 11:00 a.m. (Location TBA)
  • St. John: Friday, December 13, 11:00 a.m. (Location TBA)

The auction will offer two medallions per island with a minimum bid set at $20,000 for St. Thomas and St. John and $8,000 for St. Croix. A 10% down payment is required at the time of the bid or by 3:00 p.m. on the same day. Payments must be made via money order or certified check payable to the Government of the Virgin Islands; cash payments will not be accepted. The remaining balance, payable in the same manner, is due within ten days of the auction. If the highest bidder fails to finalize the purchase within this period, the medallion will automatically be awarded to the second-highest bidder.

Veterans who purchase medallions are prohibited from transferring or leasing them within the first three years of ownership. After this period, any transfer must be made to another eligible veteran.
