The V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue announced Friday that taxpayers who applied for the six-month automatic extension for filing their 2023 income tax returns now have until Monday, February 3, 2025, to submit their returns. This adjustment was made by the U.S. IRS in response to the disruptions caused by Hurricane Ernesto.

According to BIR, this extension applies solely to taxpayers who have a valid extension on file with the BIR. However, the Bureau emphasized that the extension does not cover any tax payments that were due before the storm. As such, taxpayers are required to meet their payment obligations for the 2023 income taxes despite the filing extension.

Additionally, the February 3, 2025 deadline applies to estimated taxes due on January 15, 2025, and payroll taxes originally scheduled for October 31, 2024, and January 31, 2025. The BIR is encouraging taxpayers who can make their payments on time to do so despite the extension.

“There is no question that this tax relief will place a significant burden on the Government’s coffers, so we hope that many of our taxpayers are not affected by the storm and will be able to meet their normal obligations,” said BIR Director Joel Lee.

For further assistance or inquiries, taxpayers are encouraged to contact the Office of Chief Counsel at (340) 715-1040, extension 2249.
