The University of the Virgin Islands is welcoming its new and transfer students for the Fall semester season with an array of engaging and informative orientation events, according to a release issued by the institution of higher learning.

Activities will kicked off on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, where students were invited to check in at the Northwest Wing Great Hall starting at 7:30 a.m. The Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas will host its orientation on Wednesday, Aug. 16, with proceedings commencing at 8 a.m. at the Elridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center.

Dr. Camille McKayle, UVI's provost and vice president of academic affairs, emphasized the importance of students utilizing the orientation day to familiarize themselves with key resources such as Student Affairs offices, the Dean's Office, Counseling and Career Services, Residence Life, Student Life, and Health Services.

“Orientation is more than a welcome; it's an introduction to the myriad opportunities that UVI offers. It's essential for our new Buccaneers to get acclimated to campus life and understand the rich diversity and resources available to them,” Ms. McKayle remarked.

UVI said students can anticipate an extensive campus tour which will acquaint them with critical facilities, including the computer lab, library, residence halls, Health Services, and the Information Technology department. Lunch on campus, campus security briefings, and insights into connecting with financial aid and enrollment resources are also on the agenda. An essential part of the orientation will be dedicated to faculty advisement, course selection, and financial aid discussions. Notably, parents haven't been left out; a special session is planned for them.

Special to the Albert A. Sheen Campus, students can attend a 'Deans Talk' at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16. This will be followed by the New Student Convocation, a ceremonial welcome for newcomers, from 11 a.m. to noon. The St. Thomas campus will host its Convocation on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Beyond these academic introductions, the weekend promises a mix of social and recreational activities such as island tours and hiking, all intended to ease students into campus life and foster camaraderie, according to UVI.

Details and updates on all planned events can be accessed at UVI's orientation website or their main website.

The academic journey will officially begin on Monday, Aug. 21, with the commencement of classes on both campuses. UVI also reminded students about the unique opportunity presented by the Free Tuition Plus Program, offering three years of tuition-free education to eligible students from the U.S. Virgin Islands, with potential additional funds for books and accommodation.
