Starting this Saturday, the University of the Virgin Islands' University Bound Program and Alpine Securities, USVI will collaborate to provide SAT Preparation Courses for high school students in the St. Thomas / St. John District.

Aimed at preparing students for the first round of college applications nationwide, the program seeks to improve SAT scores among Virgin Islands high schoolers.

The first of two programs, known as the Boot Camp, is tailored for high school juniors and seniors and kicks off with a practice SAT exam on Saturday, Oct. 14. The program will continue for five consecutive Saturdays, offering both Math and English lessons. The official College Board SAT Exam will be administered on Saturday, Dec. 2. The second, 10-week program begins on Saturday, Dec. 9, with its final exam scheduled for Saturday, March 9. Both programs will be held at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas.

According to program organizers, many Virgin Islands students have not taken a mock SAT before attempting the actual test. The University Bound’s free SAT preparation program aims to change that, offering students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the test format and practice consistently. Past students of the Alpine SAT Prep have seen an average increase of 60 points in their SAT scores after completing the program.

“We at Alpine believe it is imperative to invest in the young people of the Virgin Islands,” stated Vernon Araujo, Alpine’s director of Philanthropy and Community Relations. "We are excited to partner with University Bound and the University of the Virgin Islands to empower our high school students with the proper resources and opportunities to reach their full potential."

University Bound Director Rosalia Rhymer-Rohan expressed gratitude for Alpine Securities' support: "I applaud Alpine Securities for their commitment and generous contributions to enhancing the education of the youth of the Virgin Islands. The goal of this course is to assist students in improving their SAT scores through a variety of educational tools, mock exams, test-taking skills and strategies, provide techniques to reduce test anxiety, build confidence and develop familiarity with the test. Each student will be asked to submit a $50 deposit which will be refunded upon completion of the course. It will be a wise investment of time in yourself."

The program is open to high school juniors and seniors in the St. Thomas-St. John District. Participants who excel in the course can earn prizes such as gift cards and a Texas Instruments TI-84 calculator, a device commonly used in the SAT exam and advanced math college courses.
