The University of the Virgin Islands has joined the wider Virgin Islands community in mourning the passing of retired Superior Court Judge Audrey Thomas, a respected figure in the territory's judiciary system and a cherished alumna of UVI.
Judge Thomas, revered for her unbiased and compassionate approach to justice, played a pivotal role in the development of the Virgin Islands' judiciary, UVI said. Her connection to UVI was profound, being not only an alumna from the Class of 1973 but also a dedicated former UVI Board Trustee.
During her tenure on the UVI Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2009, Judge Thomas was actively involved in several key committees, including the Academic, Research, and Student Affairs Committee, the Governance Committee, and the Planning Committee. She was recognized for her insightful presentations at national conferences on governance matters and contributed significantly to the planning of the 2009 inauguration of UVI President Dr. David Hall.
UVI President Hall reminisced about Judge Thomas's invaluable support, recalling how she became a caring figure to his family during their transition to the Virgin Islands. Her character and thoughtfulness left a lasting impression on him and his family.
"Judge Thomas was extremely helpful to my family... She lovingly became a 'big auntie' to my daughters... and regularly checked in on my wife Marilyn," said President Hall, acknowledging her profound impact on both his personal life and the University.
Judge Thomas, who retired from the bench in 2012, was not only a legal luminary but also a mentor and inspiration to many young Virgin Islanders, UVI said. She dedicated her time to guiding students, particularly through the annual moot court competition, encouraging many to pursue legal careers and fight for justice.
The University of the Virgin Islands extended its deepest condolences to Judge Thomas's family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable life.
