The University of the Virgin Islands' University Bound Program has announced the launch of a free SAT Prep Program for junior and senior high school students in St. Croix. The program is open to students attending public, private, and parochial schools and aims to improve their performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
The SAT is a critical entrance exam used by many colleges and universities for admissions decisions. It measures a student's readiness for college and provides a common data point for comparing applicants. Despite some institutions making the exam optional in recent years, the SAT continues to play a significant role in assessing students' preparedness for college-level math and English courses. High SAT scores can also open doors for scholarship opportunities.
Rosalia Rhymer Rohan, the director of the University Bound Program, emphasized the importance of the SAT Prep Program. “The goal of the program is to help improve student's performance on standardized tests by familiarizing them with this type of examination, equipping them with test-taking strategies, augmenting their overall test-taking skills, providing techniques to reduce test anxiety, and building their confidence," she said. "I encourage students to take advantage of this free program. Taking time to advance your college career even before it starts is a worthwhile investment in your future."
The program has been made possible through a generous donation from Territory East Asset Management and will be administered by the University Bound Program. Students enrolled in the program will meet on Saturdays for ten weeks at the Albert A. Sheen Campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.
Registration is open until Wednesday, September 20. Space is limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, or to register, individuals can contact Michelle Albany-Crispin at (340) 692-4182 or via email at [email protected].
The University Bound Program, formerly known as Upward Bound, is a college preparatory initiative aimed at generating the skills and motivation necessary for academic success in high school and beyond.
