Amidst prolonged drought conditions, the V.I. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) have announced new measures of relief for the region's farmers.
Agriculture Commissioner Louis E. Petersen, alongside FSA District Director Mark Carlton, have informed livestock producers from both St. Croix and St. Thomas about their eligibility for direct assistance. This aid comes via the FSA's Livestock Forage Program (LFP).
The LFP springs into action providing relief when the region faces a severe drought (known as D2) for 8 continuous weeks or more. The assistance magnifies when an exceptional drought level (D4) is recorded. St. Croix experienced this extreme level earlier this year, according to the agriculture department.
Farmers have also been urged to report any livestock fatalities resulting from the extreme drought and high temperatures. These reports should be directed to the local FSA situated at 4401 Sion Farms, Suite 2, Christiansted.
In a further effort to assist the farming community, the USDA FSA has opened its doors to applications addressing crop production losses linked to the drought. However, this provision applies exclusively to farmers who enrolled in the Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) back in December 2022.
FSA has emphasized its commitment to swiftly processing and disbursing payments to all qualified farmers.
