Welcome to "The Monday Digest", a new series on VI Consortium that is simple as it sounds: helping our readers start the week with excerpts of stories that occurred over the weekend.
Below, the top headlines:
Tropical Storm Laura Was a Rain Event
The storm brought rain all Saturday and kept the day cool on Sunday. It did cause some hiccups at the V.I. Water and Power Authority and Limetree Bay, though. The full read is here.
11th Covid-19 Death Identified as 92-Year-Old Man
The V.I. Department of Health on Sunday confirmed the territory's 11th Covid-19 death to be a 92-year-old man from St. Thomas. The USVI recorded 48 Covid-19 cases between Friday and Saturday.
Sen. Marvin Blyden's Son Arrested
Khalid Blyden, son of Senator Marvin Blyden, was arrested on Friday on gun and drug charges. He was unable to post bail of $150,000 and was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing. Senator Blyden on Sunday told the Consortium that he would issue a formal statement this week once he learned more about what occurred.
Separately, the V.I.P.D. has launched an internal investigation into the leaking of a video of the arrest of Khalid. Police Commissioner Trevor Velinor said, “To build trust requires both transparency and accountability.”
Elsewhere, the Dept. of Licensing and Consumer Affairs notified the public that the "Progresso Organic Chicken Noodle Soup" had been recalled, and Limetree Bay reported an overflow of storm-water into a holding pond after heavy rainfall on Saturday caused the handling pump to fail.
