The Office of the Lieutenant Governor's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division has been selected as the recipient of the Exemplary Government System Award by the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) Review Committee, the O.L.G. has announced.
“We are ecstatic at the selection of our GIS Division for such a distinguished award,” Mr. Governor Roach said in a release issued Tuesday. “Across the nation, a significant number of GIS Enterprises submitted applications for review and recognition, however, the USVI’s GIS Division was selected as the only recipient in the ‘Exemplary Government’ category. This is indeed an honor, as the ESIG awards serve as the pinnacle of GIS industry awards globally.”
The URISA is a global nonprofit multi-disciplinary geospatial organization that provides professional education and training, advocacy for geospatial challenges and issues, and essential resources for GIS professionals.
The Exemplary Systems in Government (ESIG) Award recognizes extraordinary achievements in the use of geospatial information technology that improve the delivery and quality of government services. The award competition is open to all public agencies at the federal, state/provincial, regional and local levels.
The first ESIG Awards were presented in 1981. Now in its 41st year, the Office of Lieutenant Governor’s GIS Division Territorial Platform & Applications has been selected as the 2021 recipient.
“The Office of the Lieutenant Governor’s Territorial GIS Platform and Application submission was made possible through the diligent efforts of GIS Administrator Chris George and his team, who ensured that our submitted package would showcase past and present projects, accomplishments, and ongoing initiatives by the Division. Most notable was the successful completion of the Bridge Phase of the Street Addressing Initiative (SAI),” the lieutenant governor added.
According to the release, throughout the territory, the GIS Division leads the charge of the SAI which will create an addressing system for the Virgin Islands that provides for a clear, logical, and navigable system of street addresses based on established national standards.
The 2021 ESIG Award will officially be presented to the Office of Lieutenant Governor’s GIS Division at the URISA’s Annual GIS-Pro Conference on Monday, October 4, 2021, in Baltimore, Maryland.
