ST. CROIX — A tragic scene unfolded this afternoon as a mother discovered her teenage daughter dead in their home, the victim of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the V.I. Police Department has announced.
At around 3:00 p.m. Saturday in Gallows Bay, the distraught mother arrived home to find the door to her locked bedroom damaged and open. She then proceeded to her daughter's room and found that it locked as well, according to the Police Department.
Upon entering her daughter's bedroom, the mother found 19-year-old Carliana A. LaBeet sitting on the floor, bleeding from the face, with a firearm beside her. Authorities were promptly called to the scene and an investigation was launched by detectives of the V.I.P.D.'s Major Crime Unit.
Initial findings suggest that LaBeet broke into her parents' locked bedroom, where the licensed firearm was stored securely. The V.I.P.D. said it appears that LaBeet then used the weapon to tragically end her own life.
LaBeet was positively identified by her next of kin, and her death was officially declared at 3:32 p.m. Born on September 5, 2003, she was described by the V.I.P.D. as a young woman with brown hair, brown eyes, and a height of 5 feet, 8 inches.
