The St. Thomas offices of the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission are now open once again.

A press release from the commission announced that the agency has “taken the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and healthy work environment” after closing on March 21 due to to air quality issues.

The extended closure sparked a furor, highlighting enduring governance and management inadequacies. This led to the introduction of legislation in the Senate that would explicitly strengthen the authority of the organization's executive director. In response to these issues, Governor Alberty Bryan Jr. faced renewed calls to act quickly in renewing or replacing board members whose terms had long since expired.

Now that operations of the Taxicab Commission have been restored, operators with license plates ending in 3,4,5, and 6 have been invited to ensure that all business license renewals, leases and identification badges are up to date before the penalty waiver period expires on June 30.

“We humbly extend a heartfelt thank you to our automobile-for-hire operators for their patience and understanding while we addressed the environmental safety concerns,” the VITCC said.
