Grabbing a safari, or “dollar ride” will now officially cost $2, following a fare increase authorized by the territory’s Taxicab Commission.

A press release issued on Monday announced the increase in fares following a Friday meeting with head of the “Dollar Ride” cohort of drivers. The new $2 rate across the board was made immediately effective.

The move came just as “dollar ride” drivers on St. Thomas began withholding services on Monday, demanding higher rates after official VITRAN fares for regular rides increased to $2 at the beginning of June.‌

The “dollar ride” services resumed shortly following the TCC’s announcement.
