The V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue announced Thursday that the deadline to file taxes has been extended to May 17, falling in line with the federal government's directive.
"Taxpayers unable to meet this extended deadline can obtain an extension to file until October 15, 2021 by completing Form 4868, Application for Extension of Time to File and submitting it to the Bureau’s office no later than May 17, 2021," said B.I.R. Director Joel Lee.

The move gives taxpayers some breathing room to file their taxes during what is expected to be a complicated tax season. The automatic extension applies to individual returns and payments for 2020 that are due on April 15. However, it doesn’t apply to 2021 estimated-tax payments due on April 15, the IRS said late Wednesday.
