ST. THOMAS — St. Thomas-St. John District Police Chief Ludrick Thomas has suddenly resigned his post, effective immediately, the VI Police Department announced Monday evening.
Four months into the job, Mr. Thomas stepped down to return to his former position as a police sergeant, the V.I.P.D. said.
“I did receive a letter tendered by Chief Thomas resigning front the position of chief,” said Police Commissioner Trevor Velinor in a brief interview with the Consortium Monday evening.
Mr. Velinor accepted Mr. Thomas’s resignation, thanked him for his willingness to serve, and appreciated his years of service, said the police department.
St. Thomas Deputy Chief of Police Steven Phillip is designated acting chief of police.
Mr. Velinor said Mr. Thomas gave no reason for the resignation. “My relationship with Mr. Thomas has been professional. It’s been good,” said the commissioner.
Mr. Velinor declined to comment further on department staffing changes. Former St. Croix Chief William Harvey was removed from his post last October.
Mr. Thomas's resignation comes as the V.I.P.D. struggles to solve a series of fatal shootings in Hospital Ground last month.
Three people were killed over a period of days in early April. A person who was injured in the April 8th gunfire in Hospital Ground died from his injuries last week.
