Lieutenant General Samuel E. Ebbesen.

The St. Croix Post Office located at 2119 Market Square in Christiansted may soon be renamed in honor of a prominent Virgin Islander, following Delegate to Stacey Plaskett's introduction of bill H.R. 5034, proposing that the post office bear the title “Lieutenant General Samuel E. Ebbesen Post Office.”

Lt. General (Ret.) Samuel E. Ebbesen, a native of St. Croix, boasts an illustrious career spanning the military, business, community, and public service sectors, according to Ms. Plaskett's office. His impressive resume includes degrees from the City College of New York and Auburn University and a stint at Harvard University's program for senior government managers. He retired as a three-star general from the U.S. Army in January 1997, having held significant command and staff positions throughout his military tenure.

Among his numerous accomplishments, Ebbesen's camaraderie with former Secretary of State Colin Powell stands out. Their shared Caribbean heritage strengthened their bond, with Ebbesen even speaking at Powell's funeral.

Locally, Ebbesen’s family is effusive in their praise. Vivian Ebbesen-Fludd, a cousin and local businesswoman, described him as a humble and caring family member. She expressed immense gratitude towards Ms. Plaskett for spearheading this initiative. "‘Sam’, as we affectionately know him, is most deserving of this honor in his lifetime," she stated.

Support also came from Reginald Vigilant, COO of Omni Systems, Inc. He emphasized that the renaming symbolizes gratitude for Ebbesen’s commitment to the nation.

Expressing his appreciation, Lt. General Ebbesen said, “I am deeply honored to be considered... As a proud Virgin Islander, I am humbled by this effort and fully support the proposed legislation.”

Ms. Plaskett acknowledged Ebbesen's significant contributions, saying, “His legacy will now be enshrined in Virgin Islands history through the naming of the Market Square Post Office.”

For the proposed change to become official, the legislation must navigate through various legislative stages. This includes passing through the House Oversight Committee, obtaining approval from both the House and Senate, and finally, receiving the President's signature.
