The V.I. Waste Management Authority has notified the St. Croix community of a sewage spill that occurred in the surrounding Christiansted area from April 10th to April 13th due to the failure of the LBJ Pump Station.
The VIWMA has urged the public to avoid direct contact with the affected area.
The V.I. Department of Health has advised the community, especially those involved in the cleanup effort, that direct contact with harmful, infectious, or chemical waste may cause illness.
Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, altered mental status, fever, seizures, confusion, headaches, weakness, or numbness around the body. If you experience any of these symptoms, please seek immediate medical attention from a local provider or at the Juan F. Luis Hospital Emergency Room.
WMA has assured the public that they are working diligently to address the situation and resolve the issue, according to D.O.H. However, the spill has raised concerns about the health risks associated with sewage spills.
If there are any questions regarding the LBJ Pump Station or the spill, the Division of Education and Communications Management can be contacted at 340-643-0410 or through email at [email protected].
The community has been advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the potential health risks associated with the sewage spill. WMA said it will continue to provide updates and information as the authority works to resolve the issue.
