ST. CROIX — Members of the St. Croix Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. have provided senior students at the two public high schools on St. Croix with WiFi hotspot devices "to make learning easier with classes canceled for the rest of the year due to COVID-19."
Under the guidance of the scholarship committee members Joe Pierce, Rick Mullgrav, Clement Hyleger and Jimmy Warren, 15 mobile Wi Fi hotspots were donated to the graduating classe of St. Croix Educational Complex, and 15 to the St. Croix Central High School.
Guided by their motto, “Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift,” the fraternity said it recognized that many senior students do not have access to the internet at home. The classrooms were among the places the students could get internet access before schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The donation of the WiFi hotspots will allow members of the graduating Class of 2020 to work toward graduating, applying to college, trade schools or even jobs, according to the release.
The fraternity late last year held its first “Greeks on the Green,” fundraiser for scholarships. Members also raise funds annually during the Crucian Christmas Festival at its “Omega” booth at Festival Village to provide scholarships for up to three graduating seniors.
“We are grateful and honored to serve the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands,” Mr. Mullgrav said. He also thanked those who have supported the fraternity’s community service project.
