ST. CROIX — Water reserves across St. Croix are continuing to improve gradually, with the V.I. Water and Power Authority reporting small gains in several critical storage tanks as it works to stabilize service and rebuild inventory. The territory’s boil-water advisory, however, remains in effect until further notice.
WAPA said Wednesday that it continues to carefully manage water production and distribution while storage levels recover.
Residents should not drink tap water without first boiling it. Water intended for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and other household uses should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and allowed to cool before use. Bottled water may be used instead.
The authority said water-quality testing and monitoring are continuing throughout the St. Croix distribution system.
Standpipe Open Friday, Closed for Weekend
WAPA also announced that the St. Croix standpipe will open Friday, September 4, from noon to 4 p.m. for customers who need potable water.
The standpipe will then remain closed throughout the weekend. WAPA said it will provide an update on next week’s operating schedule after monitoring system conditions over the weekend.
Conservation Still Needed
Despite the gradual improvement in storage levels, WAPA is asking customers to continue conserving water while reserves recover.
Residents are being encouraged to postpone non-essential uses such as washing vehicles, pressure washing and watering lawns, and to avoid allowing water to run unnecessarily. WAPA said reducing demand will help support the system’s continued recovery.
The authority said it will continue issuing updates as conditions change while working to restore reliable service and address the ongoing challenges affecting St. Croix’s water system.
