An opportunity for fishers in the U.S. Virgin Islands to learn more about marine fisheries science and management is coming to St. Croix in May.
According to a recently issued release, the Marine Resource Education Program (MREP) has been managed by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) since 2005. Founded four years earlier by two fishers from the state of Maine, the program now trains fishers, managers, scientists and other fisheries industry members across the nation as they work towards building healthy, sustainable fisheries in their area of operation.
The program, according to the GMRI, is tailored to suit the needs of each community in which it is delivered, working collaboratively with local leaders to ensure that each training delivers skills and knowledge uniquely relevant to each cohort of participants.
Fishers – whether commercial, recreational, or charter – are encouraged to apply to take part in the training, which will be held from May 14-16. The full cost of the training (plus food, lodging, and travel) is covered, making attending free of charge for participants.
