High-achieving graduating seniors who wish to attend university on the mainland can now apply for a scholarship opportunity to help them accomplish their academic goals.

Named after property developer Edward P. McKenzie, the eponymous Family Trust Scholarship has announced that it is accepting applications for the 2023 cycle of scholarship awards. Established in 2021 by Mr. McKenzie and his sons Drew and Scott, the scholarship “seeks to provide more funding options for accomplished high school graduates,” according to a press release announcing the awards.

“We have always been extremely passionate about education and making it more accessible to accomplished students,” said Drew McKezie, a New York University alumnus. “We hope that our scholarship will bring the financial support they need to pursue their academic goals.”

Eligible students will receive between $500 and $2,500 which can be used to defray the costs of any academic or school-related expenses including travel, housing, tuition, fees, books, and other support while away at school.  Fourteen Virgin Islanders have been awarded scholarship grants since the program began two years ago.

Successful candidates will be 2023 high school graduates in the top 10 percent of their graduating class who have been accepted by a college or university in the continental United States. Scholarship recipients will have demonstrated a history of community service and a track record of extensive involvement in high school ad/or civic extra curricular activities. They must show evidence of a passion for improving public conditions of society in health, government, science, art or education, and have a demonstrated need for financial assistance.

“We want to help accomplished graduates achieve their educational goals, improve their economic prospects and help their families,” said Scott McKenzie, who matriculated from the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School before graduating from Fordham University.

Scholarship applications, which can be completed online, must be submitted before May 31.
