ST. JOHN — The V.I. Fire and Emergency Medical Services on Saturday responded to a 911 call about a structural fire at an unoccupied residence in Enighed, St. John. A total of 14 personnel, including off-duty members, effectively controlled the blaze within an hour, preventing its spread to the surrounding community and reporting no injuries, according to VIFEMS.
Two initial units from the Zulu company arrived on the scene and were quickly joined by additional support crews from Romeo Company. Crews stayed on the scene an additional hour to completely extinguish all lingering hot spots. During the operation, firefighters received medical attention from the EMS Unit for smoke and heat exposure.
The VIFEMS Investigation Unit has commenced procedures to determine the origin and cause of the fire, according to a release. Two tankers and two pumper units were used to fully extinguish the fire.
St. John Deputy Chief of Operations, Magabe Calixte, praised the efforts of the team: "Our firefighters demonstrated exceptional commitment and skill in managing this situation. The rapid response of our brave firefighters and EMS unit during this incident embodies our duty as First Responders."
VIFEMS extended its gratitude for the support provided by the local community and the Virgin Islands Police Department during the operation.
