The V.I. Department of Public Works (DPW) announced recently the completion of VITRAN's Operations and Maintenance Facility on St. Thomas. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Jan. 8 to celebrate the much-needed upgrades for this federally funded project.
DPW said the project scope included the construction of a new bus wash pavilion, installation of an oil and water separator, as well as the removal of an existing chain link fence, which was replaced with cantilever fencing. Upgrades also included the installation of light poles, as well as the construction of a new concrete driveway and parking lot. The traffic flow was also redesigned for increased functionality.
“This facility gives our maintenance personnel an improved working environment for conducting repairs,” said D.P.W. Commissioner Nelson Petty. “I am very pleased with the finished product.”
D.P.W. said its Public Transportation Office worked with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to obtain grants to fund the project.
“This project is just the beginning,” said Deputy Commissioner of Transportation Karole Ovesen-McGregor.
VITRAN’s St. Croix Maintenance and Operations Facility is nearing the construction phase and the operations facility on St. John is scheduled to be upgraded this year, according to the department. “Additional plans include transfer stations, bus shelters, fixed route expansions, fleet expansions and additional staffing,” Mr. McGregor added.
D.P.W. said it appreciates the community's patience as it works to improve the territory’s infrastructure.
