The Dept. of Public Works last week held a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Virgin Islands Transportation System (VITRAN) Maintenance and Operations Facility on St. Croix. The new facility will replace the 30-year-old current structure that lacks the space and equipment necessary to maintain VITRAN, according to a Government House release. Governor Bryan was present for the event.

As designed, the new facility is 14,950 square feet and will be the primary operating facility for VITRAN. It will comprise three buildings: an operations facility, a bus washing building and a tire storage building, according to the release.

The new buildings will also include four service bays outfitted to perform complete maintenance of all transit vehicles, as well as the administrative offices for all of VITRAN’s St. Croix staff.

The cost of the new facility is $6.7 million, according to Government House.
