ST. CROIX — A structure fire in downtown Christiansted on Wednesday afternoon left one person dead, after firefighters arrived to find a small wooden building fully engulfed in flames and moved quickly to bring the blaze under control.
According to the V.I. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the incident was reported on Wednesday, March 25, at approximately 1:58 p.m., when crews were dispatched to East Street in downtown Christiansted.
Responding firefighters from C Company arrived on scene and encountered a small wooden structure consumed by fire. Because of the conditions they found, crews carried out an exterior attack and were able to bring the blaze under control within 20 minutes.
VIFEMS said the structure was located next to a main residence on the property and was being used as a living space at the time of the fire.
During operations, the occupant was found outside the structure and was later pronounced dead.
No other injuries were reported. Authorities also said there was no damage to the main residence or to nearby properties.
After the fire was contained, investigators from the VIFEMS Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit responded to the scene and began investigating what caused the fire.
“This is a tragic incident,” said VIFEMS Director Antonio O. Stevens. “We extend our condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time and recognize the impact this loss has on the community."
