Man Shot Dead in La Grande Princesse; Suspect Calls Police to Report Incident; Police Identify Victim

Update: The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Sheldon Liburd. 

Original Story: ST. CROIX – The V.I. Police Department is currently investigating a shooting death reported in La Grande Princesse on Wednesday evening, the Consortium can confirm.

The 911 Emergency Call Center said it received a distress call at approximately 6:05 p.m. from a male caller claiming that he had just shot another man. The man reportedly informed the operator that the victim was on the ground. The incident occurred at location #5A in the La Grande Princesse area, across from the Food Town supermarket.

According to police, quoting information provided to them, the deceased victim was driving in the area while the man in custody was performing landscaping. The two men, who knew each other, got into a dispute which resulted in the shooting death of the man who was driving, according to a preliminary investigation.

Upon receipt of the call, the VIPD dispatched officers, forensic investigators, and personnel from the Criminal Investigation Bureau to the scene. The Emergency Medical Services also quickly arrived on location to assist.

While on the scene, EMS personnel confirmed that the male individual was deceased, thereby prompting an investigation into the incident. 

The case remains active as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The VIPD will provide updates as more information becomes available.
