The V.I. Port Authority has announced that maintenance dredging at the Noel “Breeze” Boynes Sr. Car Ferry Dock in Red Hook, St. Thomas, is set to commence on Thursday, November 30.
This essential maintenance work is planned to be conducted at night, ensuring minimal disruption to the regular barge and passenger ferry operations in the area.
The Boynes Car Ferry Dock is a crucial hub in Red Hook, frequently used by three barge companies. These companies are integral to the transportation network in the district, providing scheduled services for cargo and vehicles between St. Thomas and St. John on a daily basis.
The primary objective of the maintenance dredging is to remove the accumulated sand and sediment at the dock. This buildup, if left unaddressed, can pose safety risks to the vessels operating in and out of the facility.
The contract for this project was awarded to Divic-Madou Enterprises, Inc. by the VIPA’s Board of Governors at their meeting in July 2023. The project, crucial for the upkeep and safety of the ferry operations, comes with an estimated cost of $158,556.
The maintenance work is anticipated to be completed within approximately ten days. The decision to conduct the dredging at night demonstrates VIPA’s commitment to minimizing the impact on the daily operations of the ferry services, which are an essential part of the transportation infrastructure connecting St. Thomas and St. John.
