The U.S. Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) has recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 near St. Croix, with the VI Alert System reporting that the quake occurred 43 miles north-east of the island. Residents on St. Croix — along with St. Thomas — posted on social media reports of shaking.
The earthquake was recorded at 2:24 p.m., according to the U.S.G.S. A VI Alert notice reads, "Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or the British Virgin Islands. People may have experienced shaking from this earthquake."
On social media, St. Croix residents spoke of feeling earth movement. "Who just felt the [tremor]?" asked Oran Roebuck, senior vice president of Popular's Virgin Islands Region, to her Facebook followers. There were many responses in the affirmative.
Tia Mills, a well-known Reggae artist, asked her followers about the quake as well, with the confirming responses coming in quickly.
The event was felt in St. Thomas as well, with reports of shaking coming from residents in the Charlotte Amalie area.
