Lt. Governor Roach Announces Waiver of Interest and Penalties on Real Property Tax

Lieutenant Governor Tregenza Roach has officially authorized an amnesty program for real property taxes in the Virgin Islands, according to release issued Thursday from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

The program, which waives all interest and penalties on these taxes, was announced as a measure to assist property owners in reconciling delinquent taxes.

The waiver, effective from February 5, 2024, through March 29, 2024, allows property owners to clear their tax dues without the added burden of interest and penalties, the OLG said. To benefit from this amnesty, taxpayers must pay the full amount of property taxes due for any tax year within this period. This initiative is in accordance with Title 33 Virgin Islands Code Section 2494, which grants the lieutenant governor the authority to waive such financial charges on property taxes.

Delinquent taxpayers who are already on an installment payment plan can also take advantage of this amnesty. However, they must be prepared to settle their entire tax obligation. Mr. Roach's office encourages property owners to utilize the Citizen Access Portal at https://propertytax.vi.gov or contact the Office of the Tax Collector for detailed tax status reports. These reports will provide comprehensive information on taxes, sewer fees, interest, and penalties accrued.

This waiver is a follow-up to the delinquency publication issued in September 2021. It aims to offer property owners a chance to address their overdue property taxes before the government takes final collection actions, according to the OLG. Such actions may include the auctioning of real property due to failure in meeting tax obligations.

For any queries or additional information, property owners can reach out to the Office of the Tax Collector. The contact numbers are 340-773-6449 for the St. Croix District and 340-774-2991 for the St. Thomas/St. John District.
