The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Sigma Theta Omega Chapter announced late Monday its 2022 Gertrude Lockhart Melchoir Scholarship Awards.
“This year we were excited to be able to provide scholarship awards to all six applicants," the sorority said. It described the applicants as all outstanding students "with bright and promising futures."
"Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s mission of service to all mankind remains true," stated Julice Holder, chapter president.
In order to assist as many students as possible, three scholarships were awarded in addition to three book scholarships, according to the release.
The recipients are as follows:
- Tashani Williams, Gifft Hill High School, $1,500.
- Kaj Gerard, Charlotte Amalie High School, $1,000.
- Rohan Nagi, VI Montessori School, $1,000.
- Saidah Sekou, Charlotte Amalie High School, $500.
- Anju Sujanani, Charlotte Amalie High School, $500.
- Anjahlique Bowry, All Saints Cathedral School, $500.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is an international community service organization of university women founded January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. AKA, 114 years strong, is the first organization of its kind for black women with over 300,000 members in more than 1,000 chapters around the world. There are four chapters in the Virgin Islands, two in the St. Thomas-St. John district, Sigma Theta Omega Graduate Chapter and Rho Omicron Undergraduate Chapter at the University of the Virgin Islands. The V.I. chapters are a part of the International Region, which is comprised of all chapter outside of the continental United States including South Africa, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Liberia, Bermuda, Bahamas, and the United Arab Emirates.
