Gwendolyn Edna Michael Henry, December 28, 1940 - March 19, 2023
The family of Gwendolyn Edna Michael Henry, affectionately known as Mother Henry, is saddened to announce her passing on Sunday, March 19, 2023, in Beltsville, Maryland, at the age of 82. Mother Henry was born on December 28, 1940, in All Saints, Antigua, to Edgar Michael and Beatrice “Millicent” James.
She migrated to St. Thomas, USVI, at the age of 17, where she became a U.S. citizen and for nearly 50-years contributed to the Virgin Islands community. Mother Henry was a woman of great faith who served as a Deaconess at Pentecostal Church of God in Christ on St. Thomas. Her professional career included working as a nurse at Knud Hansen Memorial Hospital and as an accounting clerk/bookkeeper for Carib Gas (which ultimately became St. Thomas Gas Co.), and St. Thomas Dairies.
Mother Henry was preceded in death by her son Jason J. Michael, close uncle Samuel Ambrose, and twin brothers, Dalma and Donald Michael.
She is truly missed by her siblings, Eugene O. Smith, Alphonso Smith, Reginald Smith, Genevieve Smith, Patrick Michael, and Gwenette Michael Turley; her children, Dr. Miriam V. Osborne-Elliott, Dr. Grace E. Henry, Joy M. Henry; grandchildren, Eladia Marie Elliott, Milana Brielle Jones; special “sons”, Lefty O. Elliott, Keith Strothers, Donovan Anglin; special “daughter,” LeTecia Nicholls; nieces and nephews, Eugene M. Smith, Tiant Smith, Shereen Daniels, Latrell Smith, Reginald Epps, and Ernest Brown III; cousins, Dalma, Sandy, Marisa, June, Monique, Careem, Jodyne, Kadeem, Charlesworth, Glen, Lolita (Peggy), Matilda, Megan, Jean, Yvonne Erma), Eugene, Sinclair, Leon, Daphne, Jeanie, Jenna; and many more loving family and friends too numerous to mention.
Homegoing services will be held at Impact DMV Church in Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 7, 2023. Viewing and tributes will be held from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M., with the homegoing service beginning at 1:00 P.M. Streaming information will be made available by the family. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home.
