The current Charles Harwood Complex will be demolished to make way for a new, modern facility.
ST. CROIX – The Juanita Gardine PreK-8 School and the St. Croix Adult Education Center are anticipated to face minimal disruptions during the Charles Harwood Memorial Complex demolition, which is set to commence on Monday, April 24, the V.I. Dept. of Education has announced.
According to the V.I. Department of Health, the demolition will not affect Gardine's promotional exercises scheduled for May 23, nor the Adult Education graduation, which will be held off-site on May 16. Both learning facilities are located adjacent to the Harwood Complex.
To minimize disturbance, the demolition will be conducted between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The health department has confirmed that there will be no blasting on the site to prevent noise pollution, and movement of building materials will take place during the middle of the school day and after student pick-up times.
Demolition contractor Lemartec USVI will implement mitigation measures, such as privacy and dust screens around work areas, a water dust suppression machine, and wind direction monitoring. Additionally, Lemartec has developed a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan and will adhere to best management practices to monitor and prepare for inclement weather.
