The Virgin Islands Lottery is bringing festive cheer to the territory with its “Deck the House” Holiday Lights Competition. Residents of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John are encouraged to decorate their homes with dazzling holiday lights for a chance to win up to $3,000 in cash prizes. The competition aims to spread holiday joy and foster community spirit through creative, illuminated displays.
How to Enter
The competition is open to all residents of the Virgin Islands. To participate, entrants must submit an entry form by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 2024. Forms can be accessed on the VI Lottery’s website at www.winusvilottery.com and should be submitted via email to [email protected] or dropped off in person. Eligibility will be verified using a government-issued ID and a WAPA bill confirming the residence.
Competition Guidelines
Decorations must be for the exterior of homes and visible from the street. Displays can include window decorations, but backyards and side yards will not be judged. Participants must keep their lights on for public viewing until January 6, 2025 (Three Kings Day).
Judges will evaluate homes based on four key criteria:
- Creativity: Original designs or themes.
- Lights and Decorations: Arrangement and placement of lights.
- Special Effects: Use of sound, animation, or other enhancements.
- Overall Appearance: Effort and visual appeal.
Judging and Prizes
Judging will take place between December 20 and December 22, and decorations must be illuminated from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. during this period. The competition will award three winners on each island:
- 1st Place: $3,000
- 2nd Place: $2,000
- 3rd Place: $1,000
Additionally, a “People’s Choice” winner will be selected based on the most likes and shares on the VI Lottery Facebook page. This winner will receive their January and February WAPA bills paid in full. The People’s Choice winner may be in addition to the judge’s selections, potentially bringing the total number of winners to seven.
Announcement of Winners
Winners will be notified on December 23, 2024, and the results will be announced on the VI Lottery website and Facebook page. To claim their prizes, winners must appear in person at the VI Lottery office.
