Damage at the Queen Louise Home for Children on St. Croix caused by fire that erupted at the facility during the morning time of Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023.
ST. CROIX — A fire broke out at the Queen Louise Home for Children on St. Croix early Sunday morning, according to the V.I. Police Department and the V.I. Dept. of Human Services. The fire was confined to a single area, said authorities, and all residents and staff emerged unharmed.
Serving the community for 119 years, the Queen Louise Home for Children has been a beacon of support for countless children.
According to the V.I.P.D., at 3:33 a.m. Sunday the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call from a female reporting that the kitchen area of Queen Louise Home for Children was on fire. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Management Services responded to the incident and contained the blaze, authorities said.
DHS said staff members swiftly relocated the residents of Queen Louise to alternate safe living quarters. Counseling support has been arranged for those affected.
Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands has promised to keep the public informed about the restoration activities in the aftermath of the fire.
A cause for the fire was not provided as part of the release from DHS, or a report issued from the 911 Emergency Call Center.
