Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has issued his Summer Reading Challenge to the territory’s students in kindergarten through sixth grade, urging them to “Read 5” to keep their minds sharp and maintain learning and education during the summer.
“Reading is so fundamental for a brighter future, and nothing should stop you, not even COVID-19,” Governor Bryan says in a public service announcement promoting the reading program. “This year, my Summer Reading Challenge for grades K through 6 is going virtual.”
Students can participate by going to www.readfive.org and choose from dozens of books there to read or borrow for the program. To borrow a book virtually, students should first register for free at www.openlibrary.org, and a copy of the borrowed book will download onto the student’s device.
Students also can read books that they have at home for the challenge.
Students also can find electronic tracking sheets to fill out online and submit for each book they read, and their submissions will be entered into a database to keep track of students’ progress and make sure they receive credit for participating in and completing the Summer Reading Challenge.
The Summer Reading Challenge began Wednesday, June 17 and runs through September 18.
“If you read five or more, you meet the challenge, and you get invited to my big celebration,” Governor Bryan said. Bryan. “Stay safe. Stay sanitized. And, read five.”
