The Division of Personnel has issued an important reminder to all active GVI employees regarding their government health insurance coverage. Those who have experienced an involuntary loss of alternate creditable coverage are required to either enroll with the GVI Group Health Insurance or provide proof of their alternate creditable coverage no later than 30 days from the date of the loss of their previous coverage.
In the case of GVI employees who initially waived enrollment for GVI Group Health Insurance (GHI) due to having proof of alternate creditable coverage, enrollment in the GHI plan can only be done during the annual enrollment period unless a qualifying event occurs beforehand. Qualifying events are significant life-changing incidents, such as births, adoptions, marriages, changes in employment status, or involuntary loss of coverage.
For employees affected by such a qualifying event, they can enroll in the Group Health Insurance Plan prior to the next annual enrollment period. It's important to note that the upcoming Open Enrollment period starts on August 14th and continues through September 15, with any changes in benefits taking effect from October 1, 2023.
The Division of Personnel emphasized that failure to provide proof of creditable coverage within the given timeframe could result in a violation of the Virgin Islands Code and the terms of employment. Any employee who wishes to enroll in GVI Group Health Insurance more than 30 days after a qualifying event will need to wait for the annual enrollment period.
For further inquiries or additional information, employees are encouraged to contact the Group Health Insurance Unit at 340-774-8588 or 340-718-8588.
