The Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Port and Transshipment Center
Update: According to VIPA, the port reopened at 12:45 p.m. today. It was temporarily closed at 10:30 a.m. due to an incident involving a fallen gas tank on the dock.
Original story: The Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Port and Transshipment Center, commonly known as the Containerport, was closed at 10:30 a.m. today after a gas tank fell on the dock, prompting a full suspension of operations as a safety precaution.
According to the V.I. Port Authority, the incident occurred earlier in the morning at the Krause Lagoon facility on St. Croix. While no injuries were reported, the decision to shut down the port was made to allow for the safe recovery and inspection of the fallen tank.
“All operations at the port are suspended until further notice, and entry will not be allowed into the port facility,” VIPA announced.
Multiple agencies are actively involved in the response, including the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Their joint efforts are focused on assessing any potential hazards and determining when it will be safe to resume port activities.
The Port Authority said it will continue to provide updates to the public as more information becomes available and response efforts continue.
