St. Croix residents will have access to free health screenings, testing and wellness information on Saturday, October 3, when organizer Jahnaya Christopher hosts a community health fair at the Caribbean Cinemas parking lot area.
The event, scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will be free and open to the public, with Christopher inviting children, young adults, parents and seniors to attend. The accompanying event flyer places a particular focus on high blood pressure and promotes a broader message of education, screening and prevention.
Christopher said the health fair will offer free blood pressure and glucose testing, STD testing and routine vital-sign checks, along with health information and resources. Her goal, she said, is to encourage residents to pay greater attention to preventive care and to become more aware of their health before problems become more serious.
“Sometimes people may not realize the importance of checking their health until a problem becomes serious,” Christopher said in a statement announcing the event. “I want to encourage people to become more aware of their bodies and understand that preventive care can make a difference.”
For Christopher, the event is also an early step in what she hopes will become a career centered on healthcare and community service. She said her ambitions extend beyond earning a degree or establishing herself professionally, with a longer-term goal of using her education and career to promote healthier lifestyles and connect residents with resources.
“I do not believe I have to wait until I have reached the highest point in my career before I start making an impact,” she said. “I can start now, and this health fair is one of the ways I am choosing to do that.”
Christopher is also designing the gathering to extend beyond traditional health screenings. Food and drink vendors, clothing vendors and other community participants are expected, along with entertainment and a raffle for people who participate in screenings. She said the intention is to create an atmosphere where families and friends can enjoy themselves while taking advantage of opportunities to learn about their health.
“I want people to be excited to attend,” Christopher said. “Creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere is important to me because healthcare does not always have to feel intimidating or stressful.”
Christopher said she hopes the October event develops into something larger, including additional community outreach, health education and opportunities to connect residents with services that could improve their quality of life. She also hopes the initiative will encourage other young people to begin contributing to their communities before reaching their ultimate professional goals.
“October 3rd is more than a health fair to me,” Christopher said. “It represents growth, purpose, community, and the beginning of the future I am working hard to create.”
The health fair runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at the Caribbean Cinemas parking lot area on St. Croix. Admission is free.
