The Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Xi Chapter and the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation (DSPR), led by Commissioner Calvert White, conducted a “major cleanup effort” at the Lionel Richards Ballpark in Smith Bay Saturday morning.
According to a release issued Sunday, the initiative began in December 2021 with the cleanup of Lionel Roberts Stadium where debris was removed from the facility and maintenance of our recreational spaces and public parks. The cleanup initiative allowed for high school males to participate and learn about landscaping, the use of equipment and earn community service hours as part of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Fatherhood and Mentorship Initiative, with goals to develop and influence young males in a positive way.
The partnership between Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and DSPR provided supportive maintenance for many parks in the St. Thomas and St. John District, the release stated. It said the initiative makes the public parks beautiful and welcoming to the community that utilize the parks for numerous activities.
DSPR provided weed eaters, lawn mowers, rakes, garbage bags and safety equipment for all volunteers. They mowed the grass, cleared debris, trimmed overgrown bush and trees and removed all trash from the ballpark.
The clean-up was projected to take four hours to complete and it took just that. Having the volunteers and equipment to fill one tall 20 yard bin with trash, debris and vegetation was incredible, stated the release.
"We want to thank the organizations and volunteers that join us in this effort to clean up the Lionel Richards Ball Bark," said organizers of the event. "A special thank you goes to Apex Construction who provided a Bulldozer and Operator to perform clearing and debris removal of bulk waste."
According to the release, the next cleanup event will be at the Ezra Frederick Ballpark which is also known as the Frydenhoj Ballpark on Saturday, February 13. The organizers welcome other organizations to join in the effort, with assembling beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Frydenhoj Ballpark.
