FirstBank on Friday afternoon notified the public that branches will remain closed Saturday in observance of the newly established federal holiday, Juneteenth.

Firstbank encouraged clients to take advantage of the 24/7 digital service channels available which include Online and Mobile Banking and ATMs with check and cash deposit capabilities.

Also, FirstBank’s customer service call center will be open from 6am-12am and can be reached at 1-866-695-2511 (toll free), according to the release.

Juneteenth, which is also known as Emancipation Day, Black Independence Day and Jubilee Day, marks the 1865 date when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived with federal troops in Galveston, Texas, and issued an order freeing the nation’s last slaves. The action from Maj. Gen. Gordon came more than two months following the end of the Civil War and roughly 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in U.S. Southern states.
